When I train legs with a partner only one of use uses shin pads. This effectively cuts down on the likeleyhood of getting hurt while still being rough enough on the shins to force then to calcify and deaden the nerves.

I also have a balance exercise where I stand on the edge of our tractor tire and alternate standing holding each knee up as if performing a knee strike. Then my partner will smack my leg with a thai pad 10 times then switch. Do this 10 times each and you'll be a hurtin unit. It's a great balance exercise as well.

A 1/4" pvc pipe filled with sand and capped then covered in duct taped 1/4 foam pipe insulation works good to. You can sit and watch the fights on the tube and beat on your shins at the same time.

I wouldn't suggest doing more than one intense shin conditioning evolution per week. I normally do it befor I take my two days off. Then Tiger Balm the crap out of them. A hot pad and a big bag of frozen peas will do wonders for you as well. I'll alternates between 15 minutes of hot then 15 minutes of cold. And do that for an hour.

thanks for this, before i started training mma i used always watch mma online and on tv and it didn cross my mind that you had to condition your legs so few weeks in we had never trained leg kicks and it was my first time full contact sparring and my opponent throws a leg kick i check it (as id seen on tv, perfect technique) no problem, i decide i better vary my attack and stop feinting the leg kick and actually throw it, so i went jab jab straight opened my body up and threw my hips into the leg kick and it landed on the lower part of his knee, it hurt ALOT but i thought it was an average pain for any fighter so i sucked it up for the rest of the round but the next day i couldn walk, i couldn put pressure on it even though i had iced it the night before, needless to say i plan on conditioning my legs but have only thrown inside leg kicks since then.

found this on shin conditioning seems to make sense and doesn't sound dangerous, give it a read and think about it.
