The only real difference between a gi and street clothes is durability. You can grip street clothes in much the same way, only they will be ruined after a short time.
Being from Canada, it makes sense to get used to fighting in street clothing that includes jackets, hoods and so on. If you can't fight effectively with someone grabbing and jerking you around by the lapel or collar then you aren't prepared.
