I want to see how to do a far arm-triangle choke from the top position of a half-guard. Locking it in isn't difficult, but there are a few hand free ways to pass to the mount once it's locked in. It's one of those common moves that you don't see much info about.

I'm no expert, but this is what I've been formally taught at my school, and have been using for years, and works for me. The moves are mostly the same as done in full guard unless a sweep, or transition is necessary.

Half guard bottom:
near arm arm-triangle
near arm kimura
near side guillotine/w fall back to neck-crank for it's sweep

Half guard top:
far arm kimura/w reverse sit-out to pass optional
far arm americana
FAR ARM TRIANGLE/pass is important to finish this choke successfully, and to avoid being swept as your hands are preoccupied in the hold from being able to 'table' out.

Honestly, I love being in half guard- but I use it as a sweeping position. Like the butterfly guard (which is my "go to" guard), I rarely even attempt a submission from there. I think that submissions in general are MUCH lower percentage from the bottom as opposed to when they are attempted from the top, so I utilize a lot more sweeps than submissions from these positions.

im with richard. ever since i started training 10th planet i looove the half guard. its like your almost guarenteed a sweep if you know the path you need to take. i used to be afraid to end up there but now i will actually give up full guard if i cant get anything happening to sweep from half. position before submission. there are submissions there but you should always try for higher percentage submissions

Agreed as well. Sweeps are much more important, and effective than submissions from the bottom position. But for the top, submissions are almost as important as passes for me, especially when I'm on the clock, and I can just as easily lock something in while I'm there if I get a set-up.
